I pieced the top of this Amish doll quilt about 10 years ago. When I took it out last autumn I found I had learned a lot since piecing this one. All the outsides of the triangles are on the bias, that made it pretty hard to keep straight while sandwiching and quilting. I used a plain green cotton as backing and some beautiful wool in between. I read on Bonnie Hunters Quiltville blog several times about how she quilted fans freehand. I couldn't find it on her blog where she wrote about it, so I wrote her an e-mail. In the same week she posted again about quilting freehand fans, so I was very happy, thinking she answered my e-mail. Weeks later I got a reply by mail asking if I still wanted an answer on my question since my e-mail was found in her spam box. How weird it that?
Geloof me, dat was ontzettend moeilijk. I used part of my thumb to measure the size of the first bow and then I went on free hand. I really had to force myself not ripping every line that was not completely straight or even or parallel to the previous line and believe me, that was H.A.R.D! I have been quilting the whole winter (not so much time, too many distractions) and somewhere in May I sewed the binding on.
On the picture below you can see my thumb wasn't always the same size... One fan starts bigger than the other. The smallest bow was the one I started with. I loved the woolen batting and will use it again for certain! On to the next hand quilting project....
